Environmental Situation
Site:
  • $0 tax base, 0 jobs
  • Former boiler and steel casting facility
  • Vacant and abandoned for over 10 years
  • Significant back taxes due on the property
  • Attracted frequent dumping and graffiti
  • Centrally located near downtown Milwaukee
  • 1 mile from the new $400 million Miller Park stadium
Environmental:
  • Asbestos throughout the former facility
  • Lead and metal impacts
  • Petroleum-saturated soils near an old tank
  • Free product at  the groundwater table
  • Impacts going off-site
 
 
Action:

Working closely with the Village of West Milwaukee and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, RER resolved the back taxes and completed a WDNR approved  Remedial Action Plan in 2001.  Building construction completed in 2002. Building fully leased to a mix of local and national companies.
 

 
 
Outcome:
  • 44,000 square foot office/showroom
  • Tax Base increase of over $2.5 million
  • Over 80 new jobs
